Need Summer Jobs in Mesa? Use Twitter for Search

by Tak Hikichi on July 7, 2009

Summer job search isn’t as easy as it was once used to be.  With the rise of useful internet search features and limited job vacancy, it seems that the spots are filled as soon as they’re posted online.  How would you go about beating everyone else who wants the same job as you?

The answer — use Twitter.

How?

Here is a quick run down.

  1. Go to search.twitter.com and enter your city or state.  For example, “Mesa”, or “Tempe, AZ”.
  2. Grab the RSS feed for the search result.  If you don’t know what RSS feed is, it’s the orange button on Twitter. rss2
  3. Sign up for Google Reader at Google.com/reader to subscribe to RSS feeds.
  4. When job recruiters broadcast jobs using Twitter, you’ll be the first one to know about jobs in your area.

You can repeat the process with any websites or blogs that provide RSS feeds. Subscribe to all online job boards, and RSS feeds automatically get updated.  RSS are much more organized and optimized for easy reading than reading in email.

Optimizing for Your State, City or Industry

Optionally, you can refine the keywords further to your nearest metro, your city, your industry until you find the best choice.   As much buzz as it has generated about Twitter, many people don’t know how to use it.  If you can be one of the early adopters of technology, you will beat everyone else to apply for that job you have been waiting for.
